maydang.blogspot.com - Hair Coils, or "Spring Rings"
Cool Hairstyles
I realize this unique hairstyling technique is probably not for everyone (as it is quite different) but my daughter absolutely loves it! We first saw these "spring rings" at a Renaissance Faire a few years ago and have been wanting to try and recreate them ever since. The lady we saw at the Faire had an elaborate updo with little hair coils popping out all over. It was a very cool hair style and very memorable!
We opted to try these spring rings with a quick half up hairstyle and some loose curls made with our curling wand (or clipless curling iron.) We show how to use the curling wand on this fishtail braid hairstyle video if you are wondering.
The day she wore this hairstyle, several people stopped to ask "The Princess" if these coils were actually her hair... or a hair accessory! I actually had some crocheted spiral hair accessories made from yarn when I was a little girl that looked kind of similar to these coils! Do any of you remember those??
These "spring rings" (or hair coils) can be incorporated into so many different hairstyle designs. You could place the coils within a braid, wrap them around the top of a ponytail, make them into a netted design, add a few accent springs to any hairstyle, or even place them all over the head! In the photo above, we chose to twist the coils around into "snail shells" or "hair flowers."
When you take the springs out, you will be left with some crazy spiral ringlets! The princess has quite long hair, and these curls were so tight, they shrunk up to above her shoulders! We ended up stretching the ringlets out a little bit and incorporated them into a side ponytail hairstyle the next day. You will see what I mean if you try this, but these coils made the tightest, most defined (strangest) curls I have ever seen! It almost reminded me of curly doll hair. You could make some very cute hairstyles with these ringlets. And a little warning: I would not recommend trying to comb these out or you will have a very frizzy mess!
The Spring Rings Hair Tutorial:
This technique we used to create these coils is similar to the technique used in creating "slide up braids" or "snake braids" which are quite a popular hair trend using a 3 strand braid. These hair coils use 2 strands. The key to not getting flyaways as you slide the coil up, is all in the way you make the rope braid in the beginning. It is very important to twist the strands (as shown in our video tutorial) while you are creating the braid, or this will not work.
