maydang.blogspot.com - Hey dolls! So I'm sure you've all heard of up-cycling, where you turn things that you don't want, into stuff that you do! My friend gave me a dress that didn't fit her, but it was also too big on me, being an XL. The style also wasn't appealing on me. But I really liked the fabric and the ruffles, so I made it into a cute skirt I could wear! Also, I realize you guys won't be able to follow this tutorial exactly obviously, since you don't have the same dress, but I'm posting it so you can draw inspiration when you want to go about a project like this!
So, here's how the dress looks. It has a thick, navy colored fabric, and the ruffles alternate between a lacy fabric and the solid fabric. It has spaghetti straps and shirring on the back, as well as a bow- like detail made from the lace fabric on the top.
Cut the bottom ruffles off until it is the right length for a skirt. It doesn't matter how you go about this, since the seam is underneath and won't be seen anyways, but for a cleaner cut use a seam ripper. Same goes for the straps. Keep the extra ruffles, as we will need those later!
(Sorry, the lighting changed here.) The first picture shows in detail the top part of the dress. The lace is only attached at the top and sides. I don't want this bow-like part, as this will be the waistband of my skirt, so I sewed the lace to the sen where the ruffles start. You can see in the third picture that you only do this on the lace part, because he back has shirring and we don't want to change that. Then, fold the top under and sew it so it's a straight line that matches up with the back. And that's the waistband of your skirt!
I wanted to make a ribbon to go around the waist, since it looks a bit awkward now. I used the remaining fabric from the ruffles I cut off and cut a long, wide ribbon of fabric, about 4 and 1/2 feet long. You want this to be long so it can go around your waist and tie in the back. With right sides together, just so a long seam along the open end, as shown in the first picture, but leaving the top open. Then flip it inside out (or right-side out, I suppose), using the open end. To close this off, tuck the sides in and hem it like that, as shown in the second picture.
I made a bow to sew on to my ribbon, using some of the fabric from the cut-off ruffles. I'm not going to show you how, as I used this very good tutorial here! For the bigger rectangle of fabric, I used the solid fabric, and for the smaller I used the lace. For the piece that goes around the middle, I also used the solid fabric.
I then found the middle of my waist tie by folding it in half, and hand-stitched the bow on.
Tie the ribbon in a bow at the back, and you're done! I hope this tutorial helped, and thanks for reading! Comments, questions, and suggestions can be left below! Yours truly, Maggie ^-^
