maydang.blogspot.com - It’s been 10 years since I finished high school and you know what that means – people are beginning to talk about a high school reunion on facebook.
How do I feel about attending? Well, I’m not really sure.
I enjoyed high school – but I don’t look back and think that they were the best years of my life. I’d like to think that the best years of life are ahead of me. I had awesome friends in high school and I am happy to say that the majority of whom I would like to stay in contact with, I still do stay in contact with.
Odds are if I wanted you in my life, then you’re already there! So I won’t be attending this high school reunion to catch up with too many ‘old friends’.
And although I’ve achieved more than Romy and Michelle (I may not have invented the post-it note, but I sure have used a few!) I don’t feel the need to rub a list of achievements in other people’s faces.
I had a weird facebook message from an old friend who said ‘I’m glad you achieved everything you wanted to in your 5 year plan’… It was a weird message because a) we haven’t spoken in like 7 years, b) my facebook profile is private so I’m not sure how you are finding out about my so called ‘achievements’ and oh c) I CAN’T REMEMBER EVER HAVING A 5 YEAR PLAN.
In the past 10 years since finishing school, I have:
- Obtained a double degree in Public Relations and Politics from University of Canberra.
- Worked in quite a few challenging roles for interesting organisations, which I have really enjoyed and I love my current position (even though I finish up in 4 weeks to begin maternity leave).
- Travelled around the globe experiencing lots of adventures in America, Chile, Peru, Bolivia, France, Italy, Croatia, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Germany, Malaysia, Vanuatu and the majority of Australia.
- Bought a house and have successfully paid off car loans.
- Gotten married and by the time the reunion comes around I will have had a baby…
Do these dot points define me? Does anyone from my high school really give two hoots about what I have been up to? Am I willing to make the effort to head up to Sydney with a newborn to attend this event? … I don’t know.
Am I glad that my life hasn’t been defined by the Cronulla riots or the fact that I still live with my parents? … yes, I am glad!
A very close school friend has asked if I will attend with her, and you know what… I just might. We won’t be attending to get caught up in old high school rivalries and drama and if shit gets weird then we’ll just head for the door and grab a drink together – because god knows two new mums don’t get out without the baby too often these days.
